Single Review - “Control” by ILOVEMAKONNEN and Yellow Trash Can

“Control” by ILOVEMAKONNEN and Yellow Trash Can has all the energy of the opening credit sequence of an indie skating film. It’s fun, sets the appropriate tone, and elevates the listener to not only embrace the manic elements of life but also celebrate the small victories that come with those territories. It’s the unemployed friend, showing you how to enjoy the rare times you have Wednesdays off work.

While ILOVEMAKONNEN is a surefire household name in the world of music, Yellow Trash Can, who partners with the artists, helps create the track for their joint project titled Everything Is Fake. The result is a playlist staple, something you would find on rotation during daytime escapades. A blurring adventure of good times that has you appreciating the moments before your eyes.

In terms of the actual contents of the song, both artists match energy as well as any duo in music; if one didn’t know any better, you could argue their chemistry would be on par with the longtime duos in music. The song itself captures the rebellious phases of the late-teens and college-veteran 20-somethings of the world.

“They say I’m out of control, ‘cause the way that I live. So imma live how I want, ‘cause I got nothing to fear” rings on the hook, and both artists flex their artistic muscles to show just how much they care (or lack thereof), about not caring. It’s a fun musical showcase that should neither be taken too seriously nor scoffed at from a musical purist POV. You can see the talent is there, but songs like “Control” let you let your hair down and embrace the positive elements necessary in music.

While the full album of Everything Is Fake is out now, “Control” is certainly a lead single to enjoy while the summer is underway.
