Album Review - “Lonely Magic” by Rebecca Sugar
Lonely Magic by Rebecca Sugar is a whimsical, delicate idea that finds time to romanticize the often mundane details of life. Through a quick 20-minute project, listeners enjoy sounds that go beyond the scope of partnering well, instead existing in intimate moments to craft one of the year's best projects.
For those unfamiliar, Rebecca Sugar is known for her stellar work on the popular cartoon Adventure Time and Steven Universe. While those shows receive praise for their musical elements, one would expect that audio brilliance to transfer to Sugar's solo career, which is what occurred with her 2023 debut project, Spiral Bound.
Lonely Magic is not only a step up from Spiral Bound, but perhaps an answered wish from longtime Steven Universe fans wanting more from its musical showrunner.
The project begins with “Ice Water,” a piano-heavy tune that captures the essence of your favorite Studio Ghibli film, where every detail is met with love, or the surprisingly rock-heavy "This is a Love Song." Although short, Sugar makes every moment a special gleam that resonates with the beauty of what music could be.
Overall, Lonely Magic by Rebecca Sugar is easily one of the best albums of the year and one you should check out. You can listen to it here.
