My Issue With Hip-hop Media

The biggest issue with hip-hop media is that they have no identity. They don't know if they want to be a play-it-straight publication or a gossip blog. They're all losing money by the boatload and have been in panic mode for the better part of five years because of it. Look at their social media accounts, and you would never tell if they employed journalists or Wendy Williams; it's sad to see. When these publications figure out their identity, then topics like "the culture" will have a genuine reflection in the world. Until then, we're all watching a circus of non-culture people try to rewrite the definition of a property that never belonged to them in the first place.

I remember writing for about three different music publications (all paid gigs), and their topics were mind-boggling: if the conversation wasn't about drama, they weren't interested. Then you look at the owner, and it all makes sense. They're all simply trying to push narratives to cover up the money they're losing, but because they're in a foreign world, they have no idea what the recipe for success is to begin with, so they resort to the one thing they believe will sell: conflict.

I'll leave this be for now, but these are just my thoughts.

Maybe I will write more posts like this in the future.
