Single Review - “Belly” by Wale

"Belly" is another reminder that Wale is one of the greatest poets of this era. And in a world where lyricism is becoming increasingly unimportant in the genre built on lyrics, Wale is the one true constant that reminds us that when a flow pairs with a tailor-made instrumental, there is no better genre than hip-hop.

Who could have guessed that Wale over a Soul II Soul sample would create audio magic?

While I have always argued that the famed big three of Kendrick, Cole, and Drake should be recognized as a starting five with Wale and (maybe) Big Sean, tracks like this are a definite stamp of approval for that not-so-controversial take.

Regarding the song itself, Wale breezes through the afro-beat-esque drums, in Wale fashion, never truly staying on topic but making it sound so beautiful. The track, over three minutes, is a twist-and-turn of the classic “Back to Life” sample, with the rapper discussing everything from success, haters, fashion, and family life. While this track is a lead single, it’s everything you should want from the DC emcee.
