Album Review - Couch Hangin’ by Florencia & The Feeling
Couch Hangin’ by Florencia & The Feeling, if nothing else, is the audio equivalent of discovering a new flavor to your favorite drink. Between the groovy basslines, the ability for every song to uncover ways of growth on a second-by-second basis, or the fact that no two tracks sound the same, this project is a late arrival, but if nothing else, it is one of the best albums of the year.
In a year chalked full of stellar projects, Couch Hangin’ reminds everyone that not only is music infinitely boundless and beautiful, but when it comes to bands, when chemistry is at the forefront, there is no better art form in human history.
Through eight songs, Florencia & The Feeling opens the album with “Lifetime,” a piano-heavy dance-ready pop hit that has Florencia flexing her vocal prowess with guitars harmonizing, perhaps one of the catchiest riffs you will hear all year. At the same time, it would be a treat to receive this musical present once. However, this is the theme of the project: a wonderful blend of fun, talent, and ingenuity for a musical addition that should be in your musical wrap-up when discussing the year’s highlights of artistry.
While additional hits include the Donnie Deneil-assisted “Closer” or the easy-going "Getting On a Plane,” there is no definitive way to say one track is better than another; however, one thing is factual: everything on this project works. It is musical medicine, designed to heal those with mundane playlists begging for a spark.
Overall, Couch Hangin’ is a great album filled with sonic beauty, and perhaps on the surface, it is the best introduction for a listener looking to uncover a new sound.
