Single Review - "Are You Still" by Leven Kali

"Are You Still" by Leven Kali is perhaps the epitome of modern R&B, where the beat is funky, and the singer remains consistent without the need to shout or blow, as if it were the final song of a two-hour concert. A great voice, great production, and the freedom to get the point across while adding a few rhythm changes along the way. That's a solid formula for modern R&B, and "Are You Still" captures each of these in spades. 

"Are you still in love like I am?" That's the line of the song that tells the story. Kali, the ever-bleeding heart, wonders if a former lover still holds the same passion for him as he does for the audio love interest. A classic case of "Baby, come back." 

What makes this song particularly beautiful is the number of rhythm switches and turns the song takes. From the opening drum hits backed by guitar licks or the mid-song background vocals that float across the track, everything feels right. It's a demo of how music can do everything from adding instrumentation to track changes on a moment's notice, yet never feel wrong.
